The PPGHouston.com Web Site

The web site for Clearman Associates was created by me, Jim Denton, a patient of Dr. Clearman.

I designed and hand-coded this site on a PowerBook G3 400MHz “Firewire” with 1GB of RAM running OS X v10.2.4.

Software tools utilized were Bare Bones’ BBEdit v6.5.3 (with Terry Teague’s BBTidy plug-in) and Thorsten Lemke’s Graphic Converter v4.4.4. The pages have been checked and verified by the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) CSS2 and HTML 4.01 Transitional validation tools. I hope to convert it to XHTML in the near future.

While this site was written using the W3C guidelines and specifications to ensure interoperability – insofar as that is possible – among all browsers on all operating systems, we do not live in a perfect world. Many people forget to check for and install browser upgrades. There will be some slight variation in the way different browsers render even valid HTML, especially if you are using an older version that does not support Cascading Style Sheets.

The site has been successfully tested on the Macintosh OS X web browsers Internet Explorer 5.22, Netscape 7.01, Safari 1.0 Beta (v60), Navigator 0.6, Opera 6.0 (Build 1003), and OmniWeb 4.1.1 (v424.6), all of which support CSS Level 2. The pre-release of iCab does not support CSS2 at this time.

On a PC running Windows 2000, Explorer 5.0 and Netscape 7.01 have been tested and render the site correctly. I do not actually own a PC, so I have not had the opportunity and means to check out other versions of Windows, including 95, 98, NT and XP, and cannot make any guarantees about how the site will render in browsers native to those platforms (as well as Unix); however, I can make two recommendations that will help: make sure you are using the most current version of your preferred browser, i.e. one that supports Cascading Style Sheets, and in your browser’s preferences (properties in Windows slang), do not set the font size larger than 14 points. That should keep things somewhat the way I intended for them to appear.

A few thoughts on my philosophy of web design. This site does not use Flash, Shockwave or large graphics, nor does it use WYSIWYG software which tends to generate bloated code. (Call me old-fashioned but I started writing HTML by hand before such things existed and am set in my ways.) From a purely practical point of view, these things have the effect of wasting bandwidth – translated as slow download time – and I don’t believe in it. It annoys me to wait for gimmick-intensive web sites to render over my broadband connection, so I can only imagine how much it irritates someone using a dial-up connection. Since I dislike having my own time wasted, I’m certainly not going to waste yours!

My task then in designing this site for Dr. Clearman at Clearman Associates was to present you with the information you need, in a professional virtual environment that is easy to navigate and quick to download, so that you will have the necessary tools to make an informed decision. In that, I sincerely hope I have succeeded.
